The Whalers never won the Stanley Cup and did not advance beyond the second round of the playoffs. But the Whalers never had the success they had in the days of the WHA. The franchise began in 1971 when the World Hockey Association (WHA) announced that a team would be based in the New England area. They then also dominated the playoffs and won the AVCO World Trophy. They got through the first round of the playoffs in 1986 and won the division title in 1987, led by Ron Francis and superstar goalie Mike Liut. As a result, the only 17-year-old was selected in the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft in the second round in 26th position by the Atlanta Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL). In 1992 they qualified for the playoffs and only failed in the first round in a dramatic seventh game in the second overtime against the Montréal Canadiens when Yvon Corriveau hit the bar alone in front of the Canadiens goalie.
In their 18 years in the NHL, they have only had three winning seasons, missed the playoffs ten times and won only one playoff series. For the first time, a US sports team announced a move without having a new hometown. The player they got didn't live up to expectations yet again and Ron Francis won back-to-back Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh. Ward then returned to Switzerland for another season and played his last professional season in the SC Rapperswil-Jona jersey, during which he also won the prestigious Spengler Cup with Team Canada. He then fled Switzerland towards France and was only arrested again in Spain. When France occupied several of these territories, a dispute arose, leading the Catholic Monarchs to declare the treaty broken by France. As a result, on March 26, 1997, the leadership announced that the team would be leaving Hartford and possibly moving to Raleigh, North Carolina.
In 1997 the team relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina and was renamed the Carolina Hurricanes. In early 1997, talks between the Whalers, the state of Connecticut and Gov. John G. Rowland were progressing positively over a $147.5 million arena and agreement was said to be near. Entrepreneurs Howard Baldwin, John Coburn, W. Godfrey Wood and William Edwin Barnes became owners of the New England Whalers, as they named the team, and chose Boston as the team's home. The fans reacted extremely angry at the Whalers' personnel management, so that the team's general manager had to leave and got a new job in Pittsburgh. The team played in Boston and Springfield for the next two and a half years, but Boston's hockey boom waned and crowd interest waned, arsenal jerseys so it was decided to relocate within the New England region to Connecticut. Frustrated by the team's lackluster image and that there were very few potential sponsors in the area, he announced in 1996 that the team would leave Hartford unless at least 11,000 season tickets were sold for the following season. He was used in all three games of his team, which failed in the group stage.

However, the death of the purposefully planning club president Franz Kremer in November 1967 overshadowed this success; its negative long-term consequences prevented Cologne from regaining or even expanding on the top position of the early 1960s. Hartford has not made the playoffs for the last five years, but has had some stars in the ranks in Sean Burke, Geoff Sanderson, Pat Verbeek and Andrew Cassels.
